On Sunday a couple of weeks ago, Mayako and I visited Arashiyama and walked around the town. We were a bit surprised to see how quiet the most popular sightseeing spot was. But in a sense, I found we were lucky because it was such a rare opportunity to experience quiet Arashiyama on Sunday. I am sure Arashiyama will be packed again with visitors from all over the world.
There are lots of great restaurants in Arashiyama. I love Soba noodles, so from time to time when I visit Arashiyama, my lunch is Yoshimura. Good Soba noodles and nice Sake's to pair with. Also, their ambience is superb, plus the view from the upper floor is spectacular.
Even though Arashiyama sounds like one of the oldest towns with lots of culture and history (that is true, though), there are new concept restaurants with emerging chefs - I love "Mama" (not mother Mama, but it means "As is" in Japanese). It is an Italian restaurant offering really tasty Pizza's and Pasta's with nice appetizers. They have a good wine list, too. Having delicious Pizza with a glass of wine in a very comfortable space is heavenly...
